Baby and animal: the right attitudes

You wonder if the upcoming arrival of your baby is not likely to cause problems with your little companions. Not at all ! Provided you take certain precautions. The advice of Dr. Jean Lavaud, pediatrician.

A protocol of the presentations to be respected

  • In the early days, the balance of your haired companions can be disrupted. They may consider your baby as an intruder. Normal, they were there before him!
  • They must accept the newcomer. Give them time to get used by letting them come in and sniff it, always staying alert and present.
  • The watchword: increased vigilance! You must never leave a baby alone in the presence of an animal, the most peaceful and adorable it is! And that even when your baby is growing up. It could pull on the tail, ears, and hair and could trigger an angry reaction in your pet.

Strict hygiene measures

  • Your pets are carriers of some germs, present in their saliva, urine, feces, hair that is not good for your little one. Drastic measures of cleanliness are required.
  • Before taking your baby, and especially if you have touched your favorite animal, always wash your hands well.
  • Although the risk of allergies is uncommon in the first months, repeated contact with the hair follicles can however cause hives, conjunctivitis, rhinitis and very rarely asthma attacks. To limit contact with hair: ventilate well and vacuum your home every day.
  • Make sure your animals are vaccinated and dewormed regularly.
  • To change the litter, put on gloves.
