Who's in the mirror?

Mirror, my beautiful mirror ... tell me that I am me! Discovering one's reflection in the mirror contributes greatly to the construction of your little one's identity. But for that, it will take almost two years!

From birth: he is nice that one!

  • It's no coincidence that most infant weaving boards and mats feature a mirror. Nothing makes a baby happier than seeing yourself in an ice cream! However, the subtleties of this object still elude him. His first months of life, he does not imagine for a second that this fun face is a reflection and not a person in the flesh, and even less that it is about him ...
  • What does it matter! These two eyes, that mouth, that nose and those plump cheeks please him. Why ? Because of certain neurons that the human brain shelters from birth, specialized in the "treatment" of the faces. These neurons are programmed to analyze the reliefs of a figure, its curves, the shadows, the contrasts and variations of light that play there. Some researchers have even claimed that faces are babies' favorite toys. Normal that yours is captivated by the reflection of his own little face!

Hush, I'm learning!

  • Giving a toddler the chance to look at himself in a mirror is also giving him an opportunity to build his "body diagram", that is, to slowly become aware of all parts of his body. For the feet and the hands, it does not have too much trouble to get acquainted: he can easily observe them in all their seams. But for the face, it's another matter ... He must first be content to explore by touch by sticking his fingers in the eyes and holes in the nose or pinching his cheeks!
  • Fortunately, his brain is champion to switch from one sensory mode to another, to combine touch and sight for example. As a result, each time he scrutinizes a face - especially his own in the mirror - he makes the link between this visual information and the tactile information he has already accumulated. This is how he slowly begins to realize that, like everyone else, he has a nose in the middle of the face, a mouth below and two eyes above.
